Tachfine Baida is a doctoral candidate in political science at the Les Afriques dans le Monde (LAM) research unit at Sciences Po Bordeaux, France. His research revolves around law and sexual and gender diversity in North Africa, particularly in Tunisia and Morocco. He works more specifically on the influence of social, religious and political norms on how sexual and gender diversity cases are handled by justice in the two countries.
Tachfine Baida holds a Master in Human Rights Law which he obtained at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) in the UK and a Master in International Relations and Diplomacy obtained at Al Akhawayn University in Ifrane, Morocco. He previously had several roles in the development sector, including as an Expert in Human Rights at the Belgian Development Agency (Enabel) and at the Embassy of Belgium in Morocco and Mauritania as well as a Programme Assistant at the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Morocco.
Along with his doctoral studies, Tachfine Baida is member of the editorial teams of Arab Law Quarterly (ALQ) and the Yearbook of Islamic and Middle Eastern Law (YIMEL). He is also a member of the steering committee of the “Qawami” research project on Islamic positivisation ad well as member of the Graduate Committee of the Centre for African Mediterranean Studies.
