Dans le cadre de sa résidence au CÉRIUM, Jillian Schwedler donnera une conférence, en anglais, sur le rôle central des manifestations dans la contestation et la reproduction du pouvoir étatique en Jordanie, de la fin de la période ottomane à nos jours. S’inspirant de son plus récent ouvrage,  Protesting Jordan: Geographies of Power and Dissent (2022), elle interrogera le caractère routinier de la contestation dans ce pays et exposera l’impact des dynamiques spatiales de la contestation sur la construction de l'État et de la société dans ce régime autoritaire. Elle se penchera également sur les implications de ses conclusions pour son agenda de recherche. 

Biographie

Jillian Schwedler est professeure éminente en science politique au Hunter College et Graduate Center de la City University of New York. Politologue et experte du Moyen-Orient de renommée internationale, ses recherches portent sur les relations entre État et société dans les régimes autoritaires, notamment sur des questions en lien avec les mouvements de contestation, la géographie politique, l’islam politique, la répression, le néolibéralisme et la dissidence. Son expertise repose sur plusieurs années d’expérience de terrain en Jordanie, en Égypte et au Yémen. Elle est également engagée dans la communauté scientifique, notamment à titre de membre élue du Conseil de l’American Political Science Association (APSA) et du conseil d’administration de la Middle East Studies Association (MESA). Elle a cofondé et est codirectrice - avec sa collègue Laryssa Chomiak - de la Sidi Bou Said School of Critical Protest Studies. Elle est l’autrice de plusieurs ouvrages académiques primés dont Protesting Jordan: Geographies of Power and Dissent(2022) et  Faith in Moderation: Islamist Parties in Jordan and Yemen (2006), en plus de nombreux autres livres et articles scientifiques.

Geography of protests in Jordan

As part of her residency at CÉRIUM, Jillian Schwedler will give a lecture, in English, on the central role of protests in challenging and reproducing state power in Jordan, from the end of the Ottoman period to the present day. Drawing on her most recent book, Protesting Jordan: Geographies of Power and Dissent (2022), she will examine the routinized nature of protest in the country and discuss the impact of the spatial dynamics of protest on the construction of the state and society in this authoritarian regime. She will also reflect on the implications of her findings for her research agenda.

Biography

Jillian Schwedler is Distinguished Professor of Political Science at the City University of New York’s Hunter College and the Graduate Center. She is an internationally renowned political scientist and Middle East specialist. Her research focuses on state–society relations in authoritarian regimes, particularly issues related to protest movements, political geography, political Islam, repression, neoliberalism, and dissent. Her expertise draws on several years of fieldwork experience in Jordan, Egypt, and Yemen. She is also actively engaged in the scholarly community, notably as an elected member of the Council of the American Political Science Association (APSA) and of the Board of Directors of the Middle East Studies Association (MESA). She co-founded and co-directs - together with her colleague Laryssa Chomiak - the Sidi Bou Said School of Critical Protest Studies. She is the author of several award-winning academic books, including Protesting Jordan: Geographies of Power and Dissent (2022) and Faith in Moderation: Islamist Parties in Jordan and Yemen (2006), as well as numerous other books and scholarly articles.
