INT6240M - International Migration: Drivers, Policies and Protection in a Changing World

International migration has become a major political issue in countries across the globe. At the same time, the number of refugees forcibly displaced from their homes continues to grow, putting pressure on the international community to find protection solutions in a world growing ever more suspicious of border crossers. This course brings together migration experts from fields of anthropology, geography, political science, and law to understand who people on the move are today, what policies and politics shape border crossing and arrival, and what solutions to migration and displacement are being proposed and implemented in a rapidly shifting landscape.

The hors murs course will take place in Barcelona with the support of the Universitat de Barcelona’s Institute of Public Law. Barcelona will become a teaching laboratory for summer school students - class activities will include visiting sites in the city where diverse local actors are implementing solutions to the challenges of climate migration (Barcelona Lab for Urban Environmental Justice and Sustainability) and economic inclusion of refugees (TopManta workshop). Academics and activists from Europe will be invited to present at the summer school, allowing students to learn about approaches to migration occurring at different scales and geographies.
